Cedar hedge trimming and structural traininge

When to trim a cedar hedge

Cedar hedges are the preferred choice of Quebec homeowners as a means of delineating their property and separating it from that of their neighbors. This, of course, provides privacy. However, as inexpensive as this solution is compared to a fence, the result can be either ugly or beautiful. It all depends on the importance given to annual maintenance, an essential ingredient for a healthy and beautiful hedge.

Annual pruning is best done between the end of June and the end of August for best results. This is the time when the tree specimen will have either completed its growth for the current year or will be close to doing so. It is best to avoid, when possible, proceeding during the spring or fall or during hot weather.

This shortens the maintenance period. Also, it is better to be early to ask for our tree maintenance services, pruning or others. You can reach us, Emondage Shawinigan Pro, at 819-805-1819 to schedule your appointment for the current year. A little tip, however: schedule a recurring annual date with us right away, so that we can guarantee you a spot during the optimal annual period.

The right way to trim

Cedar pruning focuses on the lateral branches during the first few years of the young specimen. This allows the plant to grow more quickly. Once its height is what you want, it becomes possible, as the tree is mature, to prune the top.

It is possible to shave the top to produce a flat top, but it is also possible to prune cedars into a cone shape. This less often chosen shape allows light to pass more easily through the foliage. The result is better development and a stronger tree. Also, when a lot of snow falls on the branches, even if the tree collapses, it will do so less and stand up better.

When cutting, the arborist is careful not to cut off more than a third of any new growth. Sometimes he allows himself half, in exceptional cases, and if something justifies it. But it is advisable never to go beyond, under penalty of harming the plant.

These are only a few examples of precautions to take regarding pruning. It is therefore recommended to leave this task to experts. Otherwise, irreparable harm could be done.

Why trimming cedars

By now you know the cause of ugly, sparse hedges: they are not maintained or are not maintained properly. Getting a full look is the primary reason to trim cedars. But even if you are a wilderness lover and would prefer to leave your plants with a bushy look, pruning is still recommended. Your cedars will be stronger and grow better.

Structural training

Now for the training pruning. Chances are you haven't heard of it, and that's a shame. The trend is towards landscaping that rivals in originality. And formation pruning fits right in with this trend. It allows you to control the structure of a plant over time, so that it takes on a particular shape. Whether you want spheres or cones, whether you are looking for straight, impeccable lines or to preserve a natural, somewhat "assisted" look, formation pruning meets such expectations.

However, it is best to start on the specimen when it is as young as possible. The reason is simple: the younger the plant is, the better it recovers from the wounds that any pruning confers, no matter how small it may be. Healing is more difficult on mature branches. In addition, when the specimen is young, complications caused by pruning are rarer.

Training pruning can also be used to give a tree a straight stature or to improve its symmetry. The earlier in the tree's life that maintenance begins, the more time can be spent pruning to achieve the desired goal. At the same time, risks of all kinds are reduced.

Trees cast shadows on the ground. However, thanks to the training pruning, it is possible to direct the shadows where you want, by playing on the silhouette of the tree. Thus, when the tree is mature and its branches have been oriented as you wanted, you can install a relaxation area under its shade. On the other hand, you can also move the shade away from another location where you want the light to come through. A flower garden for example.

Apart from getting your trees into the shape you want, training pruning strengthens your tree specimens. In the case of fruit trees, it helps to stimulate fruit production.

These are all examples of the skills mastered by our arborists at Emondage Shawinigan Pro, particularly with regard to the different species, both fruit and non-fruit, as well as the various pruning techniques.

Training pruning is a precision task that requires us to make a reconnaissance visit. This way, we will be able to understand your expectations, see your tree species and their degree of maturity, as well as their layout and the layout of your property.
