Certificate of authorization to cut down a tree
A permit must be obtained to cut trees larger than 10 centimetres in diameter. The fee for a felling (urban or shoreline) is $25 (at the time of writing). It takes approximately 20 days for the permit to be issued after a complete application. The certificate is valid for six months.
The following documents must be attached to the application: the notarized contract for an owner for less than three months, photos and written confirmation by a forestry engineer or arborist. Other documents may be requested. A permit application and payment can be made online on the City of Shawinigan's website.

What are acceptable reasons for cutting down a tree?
Felling may be authorized for construction or landscaping purposes, or to comply with a by-law. Any tree larger than 10 centimetres in diameter measured at 1.3 metres from the ground must be replaced by another within six months of the permit being issued, unless the tree is dead or suffering from an incurable disease. A "Declaration of Work - Dead or Diseased Tree" must be completed and used as part of the permit application, which is free of charge in this case.
A permit without having to replace the tree may also be issued for any tree that has become dangerous to the safety of persons or because it harms the growth or well-being of neighbouring trees, if it damages public or private property, because it would interfere with public works or a construction project accepted by the City of Shawinigan. The permitted replacement species and their minimum dimensions are identified in the zoning by-law.
Additional provisions apply in forest cover protection areas, in agricultural zones, in the Lac des Piles watershed zone, in the riparian strip of a lake or watercourse, in the vicinity of a public road, in a landslide risk zone or near a slope, as well as in certain other zones.
